Extensionality of Simply Typed Logic Programs

چکیده

We set up a framework for the study of extensionality in the context of higher-order logic programming. For simply typed logic programs we propose a novel declarative semantics, consisting of a model class with a semicomputable initial model, and a notion of extensionality. We show that the initial model of a simply typed logic program, in case the program is extensional, collapses into a simple, set-theoretic representation. Given the undecidability of extensionality in general, we develop a decidable, syntactic criterion which is sufficient for extensionality. Some typical examples of higher-order logic programs are shown to be extensional. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 68N05, 68N17, 68Q6

M-Set Models

In [1] Andrews studies elementary type theory, a form of Church’s type theory [12] without extensionality, descriptions, choice, and infinity. Since most of the automated search procedures implemented in Tps [4] do not build in principles of extensionality, descriptions, choice or infinity, they are essentially searching for proofs in elementary type theory. In particular, search procedures bas...

Comparing Approaches To Resolution Based Higher-Order Theorem Proving

We investigate several approaches to resolution based automated theorem proving in classical higher-order logic (based on Church’s simply typed λ-calculus) and discuss their requirements with respect to Henkin completeness and full extensionality. In particular we focus on Andrews’ higher-order resolution (Andrews 1971), Huet’s constrained resolution (Huet 1972), higher-order E-resolution, and ...

Extensional Higher-Order Paramodulation and RUE-Resolution

This paper presents two approaches to primitive equality treatment in higher-order (HO) automated theorem proving: a calculus EP adapting traditional first-order (FO) paramodulation [RW69] , and a calculus ERUE adapting FO RUE-Resolution [Dig79] to classical type theory, i.e., HO logic based on Church’s simply typed λ-calculus. EP and ERUE extend the extensional HO resolution approach ER [BK98a...

System Description: LEO - A Higher-Order Theorem Prover

Many (mathematical) problems, such as Cantor’s theorem, can be expressed very elegantly in higher-order logic, but lead to an exhaustive and un-intuitive formulation when coded in first-order logic. Thus, despite the difficulty of higher-order automated theorem proving, which has to deal with problems like the undecidability of higher-order unification (HOU) and the need for primitive substitut...

Natural Inductive Theorems for Higher-Order Rewriting

The notion of inductive theorems is well-established in first-order term rewriting. In higherorder term rewriting, in contrast, it is not straightforward to extend this notion because of extensionality (Meinke, 1992). When extending the term rewriting based program transformation of Chiba et al. (2005) to higher-order term rewriting, we need extensibility, a property stating that inductive theo...
